Questions about Chris McCandless
1. Was Chris a whacko or courageous?
Although there may be critics from left and right, everyone has their own opinions. As for ours, we believe that he is a bit of both. I personally think that there is ought to be a good reason why he wanted to set out on a long expedition into the wild, but at the same time, I am very curious to know why is that. I would not entirely say that he is courageous because what he had done is not an act of bravery but rather an intuition upon his desires.
2. Does McCandless deserve the media attention?
I do find it a bit unreasonable that Chris received all the media attention unlike numerous of other unknown adventures who also seek a journey in the wilderness. However, I am at the same time glad that he had the media attention because if his death was not exposed, then I think most people will be unaware of the deaths of other unknown people.
3. Should people criticize Krakauer for his inspiration in McCandless?
I think critics should not be incredibly critical of Krakauer's inspiration in the young man. Why? Well clearly in one of the chapters, the author shared a personal reflection of his own record when he around McCandless's age. The story Krakauer presented not only allows the readers to know that Krakauer was also an ambitious, foolish, and young adult but also the fact that he can relate his personal experiences to McCandless's feelings and journey.
4. Did Chris have the right to resent his parents?
I do not entirely blame Chris's resentment towards his parents after he discovered that his father had an affair while he was married. However, I believe McCandless is a very strong believer in Tolstoy's belief and that did make a huge significant upon his way of thinking, which is one of the many reasons why he resented his parents and their lifestyle.
