Krakauer is still continuing his rock climbing story and trying to relate to McCandless. To farther disprove the fact that Mccandless was not suicidal, Krakauer input his mentality of “the ideal of my own death- was still largely outside my conceptual grasp”(151). Overall Krakauer explains that he was no way smarter than Mccandless, but instead he was very lucky to be come out of the rock climbing experience alive. Krakauer noted that people called McCandless stupid for confusing a caribou for a moose. Critics called McCandless incompetent for having a shortage of knowledge about animals. Krakauer defends McCandless by stating and proving that the animal the McCandless shot was really a moose instead of a caribou. Proof of the moose can be found within the various photographs that McCandless took. This interruption set the tone of anger because people wrongly assume that McCandless was an idiot. The effect that the interruption had was that McCandless was not an idiot when it comes to animal identification.
(Page 185)
McCandless’s hubris and dumb mistake were the reason for his downfall. Krakauer’s friend acknowledge the fact that McCandless tries to live off the land for months. He also stated that the idea to live off the land is completely difficult to do and not many people will ever take up the challenge to do so. This passage set the tone for heroic for McCandless. The purpose of this interruption is to show that McCandless was a courageous individual that tries to take on an impossible challenge.
(Page 194)
People assume that McCandless was stupid for confusing the two types of seeds, which ultimately got him killed. McCandless ate a potato seed which rendered his digestive system useless. McCandless eventually died because of starvation. Krakauer disprove the fact that McCandless had ate the wrong seed, but instead he had eaten a seed that contains a poisonous mold. This rebuke shows a tone of sadness and relief. This interruption had an effect that McCandless was still not the idiot people made him out to be just a careless mistake that really got him killed.
